The Birth of Love
Greetings and good morning brothers and sisters This is Dr. James Perry continuing with our series where we seek to explore the deeper meanings of our relationship with Jesus Christ. Over the years, the heavenly Father has revealed many revelations of spiritual truth to me, and I want to share them with you. This morning we will ponder our lives as we seek to understand how pain and sorrow causes the birth of love.
And now, sit back and listen to today's message.
"My brethren, count it all joy when we fall into divers temptation. Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience, but let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire." James, Chapter 1, Verses 2,3, and 4.
The Birth of Love
And now from the depths of a pain-filled life comes still more pain, pain so severe and persistent that it stuns the mind like an electric shock. Out of this pain come new meanings and values, greater spiritual understanding and growth. Out of this pain comes an increased capacity to love and be loved. Out of this pain comes pleasure. Out of the dredges of sorrow comes joy. Out of turmoil comes peace, a peace that passes all understanding. And finally out of the depths of this soul comes a new relationship between God and ourselves.
God is spirit. God is alive. God is eternal and infinite. But more staggering than this is the everlasting truth that God is love. This love is filled with life, life so fine and alive that it can only be experienced as it passes through us onto others. Love is not selfish. It can never be a gift just for oneself. It can only be given to others. Love always seeks to penetrate deeper and deeper into the lives of those upon whom it is given. The less we appreciate love, the greater the need for it.
Love can never be contained, and once bestowed, it never ceases. Love is the most real of all realities. It is the essence of all life. Indeed it is life itself. It is life so incredibly alive and so far above our understanding that without this love we are truly dead. As we identify with this love, we become more real and more alive. We can experience this love daily; indeed, every unselfish act is an experience of this love. Every selfish act is a denial of it.
When we experience love, we are experiencing God, who is love. The more we allow love to flow through us, the more we become like God. Often this love is not felt except in times of adversity. And though we sometimes may be miserable, we are redeemed by spiritual truths that are a result of our experience with misery. By faith we know that our heavenly Father loves us. We know that He is all powerful and controls all things. We also know that we are his sons and daughters.
We know that no real harm can ever befall our souls. We also know that everything that happens to us helps to make us perfect, even as He is perfect. We know that we are one with Him, and that we always desire what is acceptable in His sight. Our only purpose for living is to do His heavenly will. He wills for us is to seek Him, crave to be like Him, and love Him with all our hearts, souls and mind; and further that we bestow His love upon our brothers and sisters as He has bestowed love upon us.
We will not be troubled or confused about what we should say or do when in the arms of affliction. We will not be upset by the discovery that we are human. All we need do is consistently act on our highest level of understanding and wisdom. Once we do this, there will promptly appear in our minds an even greater revelation of truth, a greater capacity to love and be loved. In this way, we will grow more spiritual every day. We will truly become a blessing to our sisters and brothers. We will become a truer transmitter of God's love.
We will discard all anxiety and fear like a worn out garment. We will allow our troubles to drive us closer to God. We will be patient and allow the pressures of trials and tribulations to anchor our souls to God, for that is their purpose. We will declare in every crisis, "Not my will, but your will be done." We will learn to love and trust God more, for the more we do this, the more we will love and trust our brothers and sisters.
And when we feel alone, we will pray and worship. By doing so, we will come to understand that we are never alone. We will hold on to God as He destroys the old within us and be patient while He slowly creates the new within us. We will stand the terrible fire that turns the soft character of flesh into the steel character of eternal life. We will allow our fondest dreams to die, knowing that all things work together for the good.
Because we trust Him, we will stand by serenely while our world of earthly expectations fall down around us. We know that He will bring us out of every trial and tribulation a much better person. We will rest in peace as our body ages, knowing that our souls are young and vibrant, full of life.
We will not anguish over the loss of earthly pleasures. We will rejoice in the knowledge that God is joy, everlasting joy. We will not be alarmed over the earthly sorrows that we experience, knowing that all our sorrows will be turned into pleasure, everlasting pleasure. We will not be dismayed by pain: it will dissolve and in its place will be light, everlasting light. We will walk in the light, and we will see better. The way will truly grow brighter and brighter. My brethren, count it all joy.
